Jean Luther Thompson, age 99, wife of the late R. Stuart Thompson, died June 13, 2024, just weeks shy of her 100th birthday, at her daughter’s home in Southport with her family by her side.

Born in Winchester, Massachusetts on July 7, 1924, Jean was a daughter to Fred Royal and Anne L. Froton Luther. Jean was a 1942 graduate of Boothbay Region High School, and then went on to graduate Gorham Normal School, class of 1945, with her teaching certificate. After her post-secondary schooling, Jean went to work immediately at Boothbay Elementary School, from 1945 until 1951. She then worked as a substitute teacher from 1961 to 1975. Many of the regions’ residents still remember her.

Jean loved to bake and was known for her ‘jam-bars’ and often would make homemade cards and loved to garden. Jean loved to be involved in her community and was a member of Southport Mother’s Club, volunteer for the Southport Library, a member of the 1st Southport Planning Board in 1976, and in 1988 started volunteering for Hendricks Hill Museum and Friends of Southport Historical Society. Jean also was a founder and past board president of Boothbay Region District Nursing Association and was a recipient of the Boy Scouts Merit Badge Counselor.

Other than her husband and parents, Jean was predeceased by a son-in-law, Phil Koskela.

She is survived by daughters, Mary Lou Koskela, and Anne Maher and her partner David Burnham, both of Southport; grandchildren, Aili Amundsen and her husband Brett, of Bath, Carrie Koskela, and her partner, Ben Tupper, of Boothbay Harbor, Michael Maher and his wife, Kristin, of San Francisco, California, and Samuel Maher, and his wife, Alexandra, of San Rafael, California; as well as five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her best-friend and cousin, Evelyn Sherman, and family, the two were known as “Double Trouble.”

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady Queen of Peace, 82 Atlantic Avenue, Boothbay Harbor, Maine, where Jean was a lifetime Communicant, on Monday, June 24 at 10 a.m. Burial will immediately follow at Decker Cemetery, Cape Newagen Road (SR-238), Southport, Maine.
