HYS to benefit from another store bag program
St. Philip’s Help Yourself Shelf (HYS), 12 Hodge St., Wiscasset, has been designated to receive the proceeds from the Damariscotta Hannaford store’s Fight Hunger Bag program for October. Each time a patron purchases a Fight Hunger bag, $1 is given to HYS to help ease food insecurity. With ever increasing costs and more people seeking help from the Shelf, each and every dollar is quickly put to use in that effort.
Help Yourself Shelf is open each Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. for people to access supplemental food. An individual signs in with the check-in person in the parking lot and then queues up to have a turn receiving a box of basics and an opportunity to select items in the shopping area. Pet supplies and personal care products are also available upon request.
An all volunteer effort, HYS would not be able to function if it weren’t for the many donors and the many people who show up each week to help make it all happen. There are many different opportunities for volunteers, from being part of the pick-up crew, to quality control mornings, to helping run the Pantry event on Thursday afternoons, not to mention the all-important bottle redemption initiative and grant writing. The Shelf is truly grateful to all who join us in this undertaking.
