Joan E. Swan
Joan Eagleson Swan, 94, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024 at her residence at Harbor’s Edge. Born in Bronxville, New York, she was the daughter of the late Ruth Braine Eagleson and Thomas Alexander Eagleson.
Joan was predeceased by William H. Swan, her loving husband of 68 years.
Joan was retired from the Norfolk Public School System having served for many years as a school social worker. Joan and Bill were longtime summer residents in Boothbay Harbor, ME, where they first met in the summer of 1949. They both enjoyed summers at the family cottage on Southport Island, ME.
Joan graduated from Centenary Junior College in Hackettstown, New Jersey. She continued her education and earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education, graduating Summa Cum Laude from Old Dominion University. Joan served as Larchmont Elementary School PTA President, was active in AAUW, the League of Women Voters, Fortnightly Study Club, CHKD Circle of Service, and sang for many years in the Larchmont United Methodist Church Choir.
Joan was especially proud to be a 65-year member of PEO X / VA. This philanthropic organization supports educational opportunities and advancements for women through loans and scholarships. Joan believed that an excellent education was an essential investment in her children’s future. As such, she wholeheartedly encouraged each one of us to pursue our unique goals and aspirations, wherever they led us. Along with our dad, Joan was an active member in the Elizabeth River Power Squadron for many years, a volunteer organization that promotes boating safety.
Left to cherish her memory are her adult children: Jeff Swan and his wife Pat of Evansville, IN; Kevin Swan and his partner, Pam Mason of Elmira, NY; Lynne White, her husband Mark, and grandson Peter of Monroe, NJ; grandson Andrew White of Oxford, OH, and Michael Swan and his wife Tina, of Norfolk, VA.
A memorial service was conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, at Larchmont United Methodist Church, 1101 Larchmont Crescent, Norfolk, VA. Entombment followed in the Church Columbarium followed by a reception in the church social hall.
