Local Republicans celebrate Trump victory
On Nov. 5, President Donald J. Trump became the first person to win two non-consecutive terms since Grover Cleveland in 1893. On Nov. 6, a dozen Lincoln County residents celebrated Trump's historic victory with a flag march. These flag wavers have held weekly flag marches on Fridays throughout the summer in support of their candidate.
So the day after Trump won his second term in three tries, came the final flag march for 2024 on Donald E. Davey Bridge in Wiscasset.
Joe Grant of Wiscasset participated in several Trump flag marches during the summer. The marches drew about a dozen participants each Friday until Nov. 1 when about 33 marched, according to Grant.
Although participants were ecstatic with Trump's win in the Electoral College and popular vote, Grant wanted the final flag march to celebrate a new beginning for the country. "I want this to be a celebration for America, not just Trump," he said. "We need to remember we are a country and need to unite. I thought his speech hit the right tone for coming together."
Boothbay resident Pam Mancuso couldn't participate in all the weekly Trump flag marches due to work commitments. But she made time to flag-wave on Nov. 6. "I think a victory for Trump is a victory for America," she said.
She didn't stay up for the election results but was glad to hear the morning news. "I had peace in my heart. I wasn't surprised he won both (the Electoral College and popular vote). His crowds were so strong."
For Wiscasset resident Diane Baldwin, this was her first Trump flag rally. "I'm so glad that all the Harris signs will be off Main Street ," she said. Baldwin also believes Trump's presence in the White House will have a positive effect. "This is God's victory and President Trump is his man," she said.
