Devin seeks District 51 House Seat
Michael “Mick” Devin (D), a retired Naval officer and a marine biologist, is seeking to represent the towns of Bristol, Damariscotta, Edgecomb, Monhegan Plantation, Newcastle and South Bristol in the Maine House of Representatives.
However, before he can do that, he must overcome his challenger Alan “Buzz” Pinkham (R).
Devin said the three major issues facing Maine and the country are the economy, jobs and healthcare.
Devin said healthcare is a moral question and when that question is answered the economy will fall in place. He is a supporter of President Barack Obama’s affordable healthcare. “It is a small and awkward step toward where everyone wants to go. If the first step is never taken, you will never make the journey,” he said. “We, as citizens, need to be accountable for the healthcare we receive, and doctors must be accountable for the healthcare they provide," he said. He believes that healthcare decisions should be made by patients and their doctors, not by the healthcare providers. “Maine can and should provide affordable healthcare to all citizens, including health education and prevention programs,” he said. Jobs and economy “We are a small state in a large country, and the world, but that should not intimidate us. We must look for things we can do to make Maine a healthier state,” said Devin. The people voted on bond issues 2 years ago. Gov. Paul LePage is hurting Maine’s business climate because he has said he will not issue bonds until 2014, Devin said. “LePage’s restriction on bonds hurts businesses he claims to support. These projects would create jobs, and improve the state’s infrastructure, prepare roads and bridges for the transportation of products to create jobs,” he said. According to Devin, good investments benefit everyone. Maine can and must help businesses create good paying, long-term jobs by investing in transportation, communications and infrastructure. Marine resources and working waterfronts are Maine’s most precious natural resource and they must be protected, according to Devin. Devin said he is confident it is possible to balance commerce and environmental protection, and would like the opportunity to be a part of achievement.
