Heartwood summer theater camp begins June 29
It’s not too late!
There are still a few open spots for Heartwood’s 13th session of summer camp, running June 29 through July 8, for students entering grades 1-12. Scholarships available by request.
The focus of Heartwood’s summer training is skill building, preparing students to perform in productions throughout the school year and increasing confidence, both onstage and off. A show and tell performance will be open to the public on Wednesday evening, July 8.
Back by popular demand: Sprouts Camp, for students entering grades 1-2. This 4 day, mornings only camp will focus on imaginative play, movement and simple stage crafts in preparation for theater involvement in the years to come. Students will be under the care and instruction of Heartwood staff and visiting actors/artists, with youth theater experience
Kids Camp is an eight-day experience for students entering grades 3-8, under the direction of Alison Machaiek, drama teacher and award winning director from Oceanside High School in Rockland, with guest instructors teaching stage combat, mime-dance, improvisation, movement and acting.
For students entering grades 7-12 (grades 5 or 6 with instructor permission), Griff Braley, LA drama teacher and Heartwood’s Artistic Director, directs the 8-day Intensives Camp in the areas of monologues, acting and scene work. Machaiek will lead improvisation sessions, and students will work with guest instructors in stage combat and mime-dance.
Working alongside Braley and Machaiek are returning instructors Mark Bedell, certified fight master and professional stuntman/fight choreographer, teaching hand to hand combat and sword-play, and Karen Montanaro, mime/dance artist and teacher leads workshops in mime, movement, dance and graphics.
Several visiting actors cast in Heartwood’s summer production, “Cyrano de Bergerac,” will join with camp instructors, lending their expertise in multiple areas.
