39th annual Maine Highland Games Aug. 19 at Topsham Fairgrounds
This year’s Maine Highland Games is a sure ticket to transport you to bonnie Scotland for a wonderful, colorful, fun-filled day.
There’ll be individuals and pipe bands filling the air with music, and who doesn’t get a thrill when the massed bands perform! You can enjoy Highland dancers, burly athletes tossing tree-trunk size cabers, fiddlers, harpers, and plenty of Scottish and American style food.
Among the many entertainers are Charlie Zahm, one of the best baritone balladeers in the world.
Then there are sheep dog demonstrations, an exhibition by rescued Border Collies and the opportunity to get up close (if not personal) with majestic Highland Cattle.
Want to trace your Scottish geneology? There are volunteers ready to help. And when you discover your roots, you can even find a kiltmaker who’ll identify your tartan and take measurements for your own kilt if you so wish.
There’s something for virtually everyone at the Games. Gates open at 8 a.m., official opening ceremonies are at 10, and closing ceremonies start at 4:30.
Ticket price is $20 for adults, $5 for lads and lasses from 6 to 12 years, and admission is free for wee bairns 5 and under.
