Alden S. Greene
Alden S. Greene, 78, born Feb. 19,1942, passed away June 16, 2020 peacefully at his Tucson, Arizona home under hospice care with his wife, Mary Alyce holding his hand whispering loving words. He leaves behind many who loved and admired him. Family members, ice cream customers, employees, and vendors will feel the loss.
Alden was born to John Alden Greene and Jeannette Francis Greene, lived and grew up in Bath, Maine. He had wonderful memories of his summers at Birch Point. He graduated from Morse High School in 1960 and maintained a relationship with many of his classmates. He attended the University of Miami briefly, worked at Bath Iron Works, and served four years in the Air Force.
Alden’s smile was infectious. He was the Ice Cream Man! He was an artist, a painter, somewhat quiet with a good sense of humor, loved movies, the ocean, repairing old Fiats, the desert and desserts. He was a hard worker with grit and determination. He set out to provide for a family of seven at America's Favorite Cheesecake in Jackson, Michigan. After his years with the cheesecake business, he landed on another adventure in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. He became well known for serving the community and countless tourists the best ice cream for 25 years at Downeast Ice Cream Factory! He served his delicious homemade ice cream with such passion and purpose. He was like a father to many of his employees and would say “We can’t do this without you!” He treated everyone with love and compassion.
Alden is survived by his loving wife, Mary Alyce and his four children, Dennis, Stacey, Christopher and Katie; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Alden’s wishes were that no service would be held and he chose to be cremated. However, one of Alden’s favorite movies was “Waking Ned Divine” and he enjoyed the scene where friends gathered to show tribute to their lost loved one by “raising a parting glass” to say their good-byes. So maybe we will do just that, for this fine and wonderful man, husband, father, and friend who will be missed.
