‘Alna Art and Artists New and Old’ show on display in September
There will be an exhibit of “Alna Art and Artists New and Old” in Alna’s 19th-century Puddledock Schoolhouse, open on two consecutive 3-day weekends, Fridays through Sundays, Sept. 22-24 and Sept. 29-Oct. 1.
This year‘s theme focuses on art of Alna and surrounds by both living artists and artists working earlier in the 20th century. Artists whose works are included are Jon Luoma, Ten Wengren, Brian Dubina, Kate Nordstrom, Belva Prycl. Older represented works include those by Mayer Smith, Carroll Thayer Berry, Allen Erskine Philbrick and Francis Wenderoth “Dick” Saunders. There will definitely be something for everyone in this show, and a few works might even be for sale!
Exhibit hours will be Fridays from 1 to 6 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be an opening reception on Friday, Sept. 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. Puddledock School is located next to the Alna Post Office, on Route 194 south of Head Tide Village at the intersection of Dock Road.
A destination to visit in its own right, the historic Puddledock School was built in 1874 and served as one of Alna’s one-room schoolhouses until 1964. The interior has been partially restored and contains original woodwork, chalkboards and other original schoolhouse features.
Enthusiasm and attendance for last year’s show was so significant that organizers are planning additional exhibits in the future, to showcase other local art and crafts with varying themes such as historic photographs, ephemera, objects and living artists work.
