Alna election March 18 is no contest
Two of the three candidates on Alna’s ballot March 18 are incumbents running unopposed; the third is also unopposed as she seeks to move from a hired job to an elected one.
Amy Warner has been town clerk for nearly eight years; now, with a farm at home, she is running for treasurer. It will still allow her to stay involved at the town office, but with a lighter schedule than she’s had as clerk, she said.
Warner has an accounting degree, ran a small bookkeeping business for several years and has 15 years' experience using the software Alna has for its books. Her experience working with the town's treasurers while she was clerk will also be helpful, she said.
"It's just something I have a skill set for," Warner said about the treasurer's job.
The post is for one year. This could be the last time Alna voters elect one. Selectmen plan to ask residents to move the job from elected to appointed.
Longtime First Selectman David Abbott is seeking another two-year term Friday.
“I enjoy the job, so I thought I’d stick with it until I’m ready to retire from it,” he said. That might be after the next term or further off; he’ll decide then, he said.
The fact that no one ran against him means that either they didn’t want the job or they think he’s doing OK, Abbott said.
Road Commissioner Jeff Verney is running for another one-year term.
“Someone’s got to do it,” Verney said. “And I just like being involved with the town a little,” he added.
The coming year looks to involve mostly routine maintenance, including ditching, culverts, and some patching, Verney said.
Polls will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the fire station on Route 218. The open town meeting follows at 10 a.m. Saturday, also at the fire station.
