Alna second selectman incumbent Steven Graham
Address: 83 Head Tide Road, Alna
Occupation: Retired Lawyer
Education: Juris Doctor
Political History (Board, Committees, other): Before my retirement, while practicing law for almost 50 years, I worked with non-profit organizations in my community, on various boards and committees, and with youth sports. Since moving to Alna I have served as a Trustee of the Alna Cemetery Fund and most recently, as Second Selectperson for the Town of Alna.
Considering the office you are running for, what do you feel are the three most pressing issues (350 words or less): I think the most pressing issue in a small town like Alna is working with all of the residents of the town, ensuring that diverse points of view are heard and considered. Failing to do this plays out in different ways, having financial implications, implications on relationships among individuals and groups of residents, and the culture in town. By way of example, during my first term: 1. the Select Board handled its first-ever ethics complaint against the First Selectperson, reaching a fair resolution after a long and thoughtful process; 2. with the help of the Third Selectperson, we were instrumental in settling long running, costly litigation that should never have started; and 3. after the Town voted down a proposed mining ordinance at last year's Town Meeting, I served on the committee formed by the Selectboard to study the issue and propose a new ordinance representing a broad range of interests in town, which ordinance was unanimously approved by all nine members and the Select Board, and will be on the warrant at Town Meeting this year.
Any other thoughts on why you are running or what you can bring to the office? 150 words or less: I am running again because there is an ongoing need to ensure that diverse points of view are heard and considered on matters before the Select Board. It is important to balance the different interests and to try to help bridge the gap between those interests.
