André Benoit exhibition in Damariscotta
The Damariscotta office of Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty is currently displaying the lively wooden sculpture images of Boothbay Harbor-based artist André Benoit for all to share. The public is invited to attend the Open House for the artist to be held Saturday, Nov. 25 from noon to 3 p.m. during the Villages of Light celebration. By employing imperfection, imbalance, and the unexpected in his work, Andre truly engages the viewer to dance around these pieces with delight.
The show, entitled, “Abstraction and Representation Within and Outside the Drawer” featuring 35 works, is on exhibit through April 2018.
Benoit brings a strong sense of aesthetic curiosity to his work as he marries together wooden remnants, flotsam and jetsam from the shoreline, trim work from dismantled homes and broken furniture parts into his sculptures.
“Although a piece of wood can have singular strength, many pieces sharing in the creation of unity in a composition is more satisfying for me,” Benoit said.
He emphasizes that the process is not preconceived, but “happenstance and only apparent when all of what has been gathered is glued down one piece at a time without prearrangement, uncertain until that moment of the final impression.”
One can’t help but notice the (Louise) Nevelson derivation of this body of work. Yet it is imbued with the vigor and sensitivity of the artist, unbound by frame, and liberated with color. As the days shorten up and get cooler, you can’t help but walk out of this show with a smile and a feeling of inner warmth!
