Annual ‘Illuminateds’ show opens August 28
The seventh annual show of work by the group known as the “Illuminateds” promises to be as varied and exciting a show as ever. This year's show will be held on Thursday, Aug. 28 with an opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. in The Barn at 115 Paradise Point Road in East Boothbay.
The artists composing this group of printmakers has worked together in Susan Newbold’s studio for a number of years. There they have been able to learn both from her, and from other artists whom she has invited to hold workshops, about various forms of printmaking.
All the individuals involved in this group come from different backgrounds in the arts, and as each continues to pursue his or her separate project it enriches their work together.
The artists represented will be: Cilla May Alden, Barbara Fischer Eldred, Pat McHold, Mary Nelson, Susan Newbold, Carole Palmer, Ron Salter and Betsy Wing.
Although other forms of printmaking are explored, monotypes will dominate the exhibit. Unlike most forms of printing, monotypes, though usually produced by a press, are not the repeatable images generally associated with printmaking. Monotype images are valued for their immediacy and uniqueness.
Frequently created by painting on a plate that is then run through the press, they can also be formed by combining several different printing methods, including the use of gelatin, wood or linoleum plates. In addition these printmakers work with polyester lithography, as well as the more classical techniques of aquatint, etching and dry-point.
The exhibit will range through many degrees of realism and abstraction and include other related works from the artists’ various fields of endeavor.
All are welcome to the opening; the exhibit will continue to hang for a short time afterwards and can be seen by appointment by calling any of the artists involved.
