Arlene T. McFarland
Arlene T. McFarland, 94, of East Boothbay died July 9 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.
She was born July 13, 1918 in Skowhegan to William and Annie Bixby Tibbetts. She grew up in Athens and graduated from Somerset Academy. She later graduated from nursing school at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
She worked part time at Reddington Hospital in Skowhegan. She worked for over 30 years at Togus V.A. Hospital as an operating room nurse until she retired in the late 1970s. She was a member of the Farmingdale Snowmobile Club and Boothbay Region Land Trust.
Family was the most important part of her life. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling wintering in Florida and rock hunting. She was a wonderful cook, seamstress and made many quilts. She was also a wonderful hostess who enjoyed hosting parties for the women in her neighborhood.
She was predeceased by her husband, Benson McFarland; and brothers, Lawrence and William Tibbetts.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Hargreaves and her husband John of Farmingdale; sons, Donald McFarland and his wife Kathrine of Gardiner and David McFarland and his wife Beverly of East Boothbay; sister, Virginia Klucz of Vernon Hills, Va.; grandchildren, Jeremy Hargreaves and his wife Jessica of Greenville, Jacey Morrill and her husband Jason of North Yarmouth, Jared Hargreaves and his wife Kim Stevens of Medford, Mass., Brad McFarland of West Gardiner, Sara Tweedy and her husband Mark of West Gardiner, Bobbi Jo McFarland of Waldoboro, Angel McFarland of Phoenix, Ariz., and Sonja Thiboutot and her husband Dusty of Boothbay Harbor; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A time of visitation will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday July 13 followed by a service to celebrate Arlene’s life at 4 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay. Burial will be in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.
