Art by Susan Webster featured at Studio 53
Visual artist Susan Webster will be exhibiting her artwork at Studio 53 from July 31 to August 27. Webster, who was born and raised in Boothbay Harbor, creates innovative work using a combination of drawing, printmaking, collage, and various mixed media. Maine Sunday Telegram art critic Philip Isaacson has written that her prints “…have the formal complexity and, often, the chromatic depth of oriental rugs. There is invention, verve, gorgeous color and continuous freshness…”
Webster has received fellowships from the Women’s Studio Workshop (NY) and has been a visiting artist at the University of the Arts’ Borowsky Center (PA) and the College of the Atlantic (ME). She has taught workshops at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (ME), the Center for Contemporary Printmaking (CT), the Penland School of Crafts (NC), Oregon College of Art and Craft, and other educational settings. She was also an artist in residence at the Maine Correctional Center, where she developed a model arts program. Recent exhibitions include the Elizabeth A. Beland Gallery in Lawrence, Mass., the Southern Graphics Council Conference Exhibit in New Orleans, and the Aarhus Gallery in Maine.
“It’s particularly meaningful for me to be exhibiting at Studio 53 in my hometown,” says Webster. “When I was a teenager I took art lessons from Eva Jones, who summered here. She told me that in every piece of artwork, there should be a place for air and breath, and that capturing the essence of shadow and light was one’s life work. It’s advice that has kept me on a lifelong journey.”
Webster will be at the reception on Friday, August 3 from 5 to 8 p.m.
