Ash ponds cleanup proves a challenge
Wet weather has continued to plague work to dry out the ash ponds at Mason Station in Wiscasset. Town Manager Dennis Simmons told selectmen in a written report ahead of the board’s Jan. 4 Zoom meeting, rainstorms have dumped a lot of water in the ponds; and the water table is so high that when the ponds are pumped dry, they have several inches of water in them the next day. It is delaying the project and upping the cost, he said.
Work is on hold until the town and the firms involved can reevaluate and plan, he said.
