Barbara Burns show at Markings Gallery
Markings Gallery of Bath is pleased to welcome Barbara Burns as our newest associate member. To celebrate we are having a show featuring her work entitled, “Face Value: Portraits in Tapestry.” Plan to attend the opening reception on Friday, March 16 from 5-7 p.m. and meet Barbara.
Barbara has studied tapestry in the U.S. and England. Her work has been exhibited extensively in the U.S., Europe, and Australia and has won awards in the U.S., England, and Serbia.
Although Burns’ media is ancient, her imagery is contemporary, focusing on faces and figures.
“I grew up surrounded by my mother’s collection of tribal masks and sculpture,” said Burns. “I loved that each one was expressive, mysterious, and primal. This led to my fascination with faces and my desire to portray people who are historically or personally compelling. Most recently, I have been using images from photos I have taken of burlesque, belly dancing, and drag performers. This work explores the tensions, beauty, and contradictions in these performance arts. I find the dichotomy of the ancient medium of tapestry being used to express contemporary subjects a powerful tool.”
