Dropping off their latest reads into Wiscasset Public Library's book return Sunday morning, Hannah Cheney, 7, of Alna and brother Sawyer, 6, shared their picks. Hannah said she read "Happy Go Lucky," a fiction book about a little horse. Sawyer read the graphic novel, "Fly Guy and Buzz Boy."

The family gets more library books in the winter, their mother Stephanie Cheney said. And they have been coming to the library since moving to Alna last August.

Having the library nearby is amazing, Stephanie said. "Libraries are a really important part of a community."

In a phone interview Monday, WPL's longtime director Pam Dunning concurred. WPL and all libraries make sure their collections have items to entertain and educate everyone, whatever their interests, for entertainment and education, Dunning said.

About as many books get checked out any time of year, since people are always looking for a good read, outside on a summer day or indoors on a cold winter day, she said.

People also use the library's high speed internet, get audiobooks and run into people they know and chat with them there, Dunning added.

WPL at 21 High St. now keeps the same hours year round: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
