Boosters plan fashion show, sale of athletic clothes from past
What could get Wiscasset High School alumni and other volunteers, including Wiscasset Fire Chief T.J. Merry, into a fashion show? The Wiscasset All Sports Boosters group is putting the show on as a fundraiser, featuring clothes local students wore in soccer, baseball and other school sports in years and decades past.
The event is set for 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at Wiscasset High School. Admission is free.
Some items will be sold first come-first served; other items that could fetch more, including a baseball uniform that may date to the 1950s or 1960, will be auctioned off to the highest bidder, Boosters member Betsy Cossette said. The items were among a large roundup of equipment and other goods no longer being used, but taking up space in the schools.
Cossette was at a July 24 School Committee meeting when school department officials discussed the items. The department later gave the boosters group hundreds of pieces of clothing, some of which bear the prior team name “Redskins,” Cossette said Aug. 18.
In sorting through the items, Cossette found what she believes may have once been her soccer jersey. She was looking for a photograph to check it against.
A flier for next month’s event calls the evening “a once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase vintage uniforms, and show your Wiscasset pride.”
Merry has agreed to be in the show, Cossette said; a Wiscasset police officer, yet to be named, will also take part, she said.
The boosters are hoping the show will serve as a fun, nostalgic community event that supports the schools’ athletes, Cossette said.
