Boothbay Region Garden Club helps with Edgecomb Eddy School pollinator garden
The Boothbay Region Garden Club was contacted by Sarah Currier, 4th grade teacher at Edgecomb Eddy School, for help in establishing a pollinator garden. Kevin Bowler and Karen Iliades from the Garden Club’s Civic Development Committee were happy to help out!
Ms. Currier explained to Kevin and Karen that the school is working with ReTreeUS Group (https://www.retree.us/) to construct an orchard in the fall and that ReTreeUS requires a pollinator garden to be in place prior to the installation of the orchard.
Kevin and Karen worked together to gather plants for the garden. Community member Diane Spear contributed some of her day lilies and the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden also provided plants to implement the 10-foot x 10-foot garden.
On Monday, May 22, Kevin and Karen met with the different classes from grades 1 through 3 to plant the plants provided by the Garden Club and the 2nd grade class added plants that they grew from their own seedlings. Each child was instructed on how to plant a potted plant, and then they were able to plant multiple plants in the garden. Afterwards, they were eager to maintain the garden by watering and even possibly weeding! The children were all very enthusiastic about helping in the garden.
The Garden Club is excited to have a new pollinator garden in the region!
