Burnt Island board seeking new members
Dear Editor:
The board of directors of the Keepers Of Burnt Island Light (KBIL), want to recognize and share with the Boothbay Harbor region and community that we feel that Burnt Island is an underdeveloped resource for the local community.
This gem of an island is located just outside the inner harbor, and is easily accessible by boat. Burnt Island Lighthouse just celebrated its Bicentennial in 2021. The lighthouse was fully restored thanks to many donations from supporters, as led by KBIL. The Keeper’s house was upgraded as well. It serves as a 1950s era living history museum of life on Burnt Island at that time. Burnt Island has an incredible Education Center with the ability to serve approximately 35 people at a time, with a full kitchen, laundry, bathrooms, and electricity. For years, and up until COVID, the Island was open for visitors and educational programs serving students from all over Maine as well as teacher workshops.
Unfortunately, COVID and the retirement of the KBIL’s founder, has caused the island to go largely quiet for the past few years. A new board of directors is organizing to reinvigorate the Island and its programs. The nature of the advertisement that you will see in this issue of the Boothbay Register is to reach out to anyone in the community who might be interested in serving on our Board. We have 5 directors now and seek to have 8.
If you have a passion for environmental education, history, and our Maritime Heritage, and can bring expertise in fundraising, educational programming and development, or organizational management for non-profit organizations, please submit a letter of interest to Keepers of Burnt Island Light, P.O. Box 738, Boothbay Harbor, Maine 04538, or e mail to: info@keepersofburntislandlight.com telling us why you are interested in serving on KBIL’s Board.
