Camping for learning
Wiscasset Elementary School students were fishing, making s’mores, singing by a campfire and taking to tents Wednesday night, Oct. 17. The fishing was a matching game of rhyming words; the campfire was colored paper and the tents where students read by flashlight or did yoga made a camping theme the school started planning in June, staff said.
For the s'mores, attendees had to follow measurements, part of the night of math and reading in the gym, Principal Stacy White said. She later said turnout totaled about 200.
“The feedback was overwhelmingly positive,” with parents calling it a fantastic, well-planned evening that appropriately served various age levels, she added.
White said Ames True Value, Big Al’s, Shaw’s and Reny’s donated to the event and Partners in Education (PIE) provided the food.
