Charles D. Lachappelle
Charles D. “Toots” Lachapelle, 83, of Winthrop, died Oct. 20, 2016 at Togus Springs Hospice after a long illness.
Charles was born May 4, 1933, the son of Dillian (Currier) and Fred Lachapelle.
He attended Winthrop schools and Nasson College in Springvale. Charles served in the U.S. Army and was a front line medic in the Korean War. In 1961, he met the love of his life, Gerene Beaulieu. They married in September of 1962 and spent 54 wonderful years together.
He worked many jobs before his employment at Prudential Insurance, where he retired after 29 years.
Charles was a member of the Winthrop Volunteer Fire Department for 17 years. He was a lifetime member of the Calumet Club and VFW. He also belonged to the Alfred W. Maxwell, Jr. American Legion Post #40, having been a member for 63 years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, vegetable gardening, and keeping a well manicured lawn. He also liked vacationing with family on ocean cruises, and spending time at his camps in Greenville and Boothbay Harbor.
Charles was pre-deceased by his parents; his daughter, Tina (Lachapelle) Audet; and his brothers, Richard Lachapelle and Fred Lachapelle Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Gerene; son, Brian Lachapelle and wife Veronica, of Hampden; son-in-law, Timothy Audet and wife Melissa, of Manchester; grandchildren, Kelcie (Lachapelle) Lucas and husband Matt, of Augusta, Parker and Braden Harriman, of Hampden; great-grandchildren, Aiden and Kaelyn Lucas; sister-in-law, Joyce Cheramie, husband Al and their family, of Lavern, CA.
Relatives and friends may visit Thursday, Oct. 27 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 28 at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Route 133, Winthrop. Burial with Full Military Honors will immediately follow at Glenside Cemetery, Winthrop. Following the burial, all are invited to join the family for a luncheon at the Alfred W. Maxwell Jr. American Legion Post #40, Winthrop.
