Clarifications
From columnist Robert Mitchell: In last week’s column “Emma and Sparky,” I was not totally accurate, for which I apologize. I’d like to offer some additional information. Emma Balazs, in addition to being who I called “the Owl Lady,” is also the coordinator for Chewonki’s Traveling Natural History Program. And I learned that “Sparky,” the great horned owl, became, at Chewonki, a resident animal ambassador because he was found by CMP employees underneath a power line in 1994. He had fractured his right wing in three places and though a local veterinarian wrapped the wing, it didn’t heal properly and he was unable to fly.
I hope this additional information will offer more clarity to the Chewonki program and Ms. Balazs’ role there. It is a wonderful opportunity for people around the state to learn more about our natural environment and some of its inhabitants.
