Classic operas, ‘Joy’, an Irish lass and a boxer
The Harbor Theatre
“Carmen,” an opera in four acts from Euro Mediterranean Festival/Teatro Antico di Taormina, tells the story of a love-struck soldier and celebrity toreador who spar for the love of the alluring gypsy Carmen in this beloved classic.
This production was filmed at the magnificent Ancient Greek Theatre of Taormina on July 15, 2015.
The opera will screen on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18/seniors and youth, $16/members.
“Joy” is a semi-biographical comedy/drama written and directed by David O. Russell starring Golden Globe winner Jennifer Lawrence as a self-made millionaire who creates her own business empire. This story is loosely based on American inventor, businesswoman, and entrepreneur Joy Mangano.
“Joy” also stars Robert De Niro, Edgar Ramirez, Diane Ladd, Virginia Madsen, Isabella Rossellini and Bradley Cooper. Rated PG13, it plays Thursday, Jan. 14 through Saturday, Jan. 16, Wednesday, Jan. 20 and Thursday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 17 at 2 p.m.

“Creed” Adonis Johnson never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born. Still, there's no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed's legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa. Sylvester Stallone returns in a Golden Globe nominated best actor performance. Final screenings Thursday, Jan. 14 at 2 and 7 p.m.
Downton in Damariscotta. The 6th and final season of the highest-rated drama in PBS history, Downton Abbey, screens Friday afternoons at 2 p.m. for the run of the show beginning on Friday, Jan 8. Free to the public.
“Brooklyn” Saoirse Ronan, a Golden Globe nominee, gives a remarkably lively and subtle performance as Eilis Lacey, a young woman who emigrates from Ireland to New York in the early 1950s, in John Crowley’s lovely adaptation of the novel by Colm Toibin. Playing Friday, Jan. 15 and Saturday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.; Sunday, Jan. 17 at 3 and 7 p.m.; Wednesday, Jan. 20 and Thursday, Jan. 21 at 2 and 7 p.m.
The Met Live in HD: Bizet's “Les Pêcheurs de Perles” For the first time since 1916, the Met will present Bizet’s lush, melodic romance Les Pêcheurs de Perles (The Pearl Fishers), in a production by director Penny Woolcock. Gianandrea Noseda conducts a cast led by Diana Damrau as the beautiful priestess Leïla. Playing Saturday, Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. following a pre-opera talk with Dr. Morton Achter at 11:45 a.m.
