Coastal Studies for Girls informational meeting in Damariscotta May 8
Coastal Studies for Girls will be holding an informational gathering at the FARMS Community Kitchen, Main Street, Damariscotta (above Rising Tide Market) from 4:30-6 p.m. on Friday, May 8. The event is open to all educators, families and community members who are interested in learning more about the only semester school in the country dedicated to experiential science and leadership education for 10th grade girls.
Local alumnae and a representative of Coastal Studies for Girls will be at the FARMS Community Kitchen to share personal stories, admissions information and answer questions about the semester school experience. Coastal Studies for Girls is located on a 600 acre oceanfront land preserve in Freeport. Each semester, 15 high school girls come from a variety of schools across the country to live for one semester of their sophomore year in a renovated antique farmhouse on the shores of Casco Bay where they study an interdisciplinary curriculum of honors level academic high school courses in addition to Leadership and Marine Ecosystems.
CSG’s Marine Ecosystems class is an immersion in fieldwork culminating in a public presentation of individual research projects. Many previous CSG semester school students, including Kate Laemmle from Lincoln Academy have received national awards for their ground breaking Marine Science research papers.
To help students form connections with the natural world, all courses at CSG bridge classroom learning with place-based educational explorations of the varied environments of Maine’s coast.
Coastal Studies for Girls is now accepting applications from ninth grade girls for the fall or spring semesters of the 2015-2016 school year.
