On Friday, Oct. 23 starting at 10 a.m., Thomaston Place Auction Galleries will present a special auction of over 525 lots of rare US and foreign coins, currency, commemoratives, and coin sets sourced from fine private collections and Maine estates. The auction will be held at the Elks Lodge at 210 Rankin St. in Rockland.

Owner and auctioneer Kaja Veilleux said: “Items included in this auction were found under beds, in closets, jewelry boxes, safes, and safety deposit boxes. For many of the more valuable items, we were encouraged by the families to have them professionally graded. Given the breadth of numismatic material, there will be something to appeal to everyone, from the casual hobbyist to serious collector.”

Highlighted among the 148 lots of gold coins will be: a 1915 gold $20.00 Saint-Gaudens graded NGC 64+ (est. $7,500-8,000); an 1891 $2.50 Liberty Head gold double die reverse coin graded NGC 65 (est. $6,500-7,000); and an 1891-CC $5 gold Liberty Head coin graded NGC 62+ (est. $2,600-3,000).

There will be a large selection of silver coins such as: a complete set of Washington quarters from 1932 to 1998, including proofs from 1968 to 1998 and silver proofs from 1992 to 1998, with most coins MS-65 (est. $4,800-6,000); a 76-piece partial set of Morgan silver dollars (est. $3,500-3,800); and a 1798 Draped bust Heraldic Eagle dollar (est. $1,800-2,000).

Among the large group of commemoratives, the sale will present: a Lafayette Dollar Commemorative, graded gem BU (est. $4,500-4,700); a 1928 Hawaii Commemorative, graded NGC 65 (est. $2,600-2,700); and a 1935 Spanish Trail Commemorative graded NGC 66+ (est. $1,300-1,500).

Collectible currency to be sold will include: a twenty dollar bill, series 1880, signed Rosecrans and Huston, graded PMG 20 very fine (est. $3,000-5,000); a five dollar 2929 type 2 bill, The Florida National Bank of Jacksonville, graded 55 about uncirculated (est. $1,500-2,000). There will also be a framed 1772 Pennsylvania Continental one shilling note signed by John Morton (1724-1777) signer of the Declaration of Independence (est. $1,000-1,500).
