A concert with Rocket and friends
The amazing "Rocket" is back to perform a free concert on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 3 p.m. at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor. Renowned organist, The Rev. Dr. Lorna Lee Curtis aka Rocket will perform a concert of organ, piano, trio, and vocal music with musical friends Maya Bloom, Genie O'Connell, Carolyn Lanigan, Kerry Jackson and Liam Kent.
Rocket will be playing four favorites from organ literature while her friend, lyric soprano, Maya Bloom will be performing vocal favorites including Schubert, Puccini, and Mozart. The trio of flute, cello and piano will play a trio by Philip Gaubert and Liam Kent warms everyone up with "Feeling Good." Not to mention a fun "Salon de Galop" with piano, bells, and kazoos.
And, if that's not enough there is a fun job for the audience during the concert as well as a chance to "meet and eat" following the concert.
After many years serving as a pastor in the United Methodist Church, Rocket returned to her first love, which is music. She says "what joy and fun to share praising God through music - working with choirs, bells, brass, string quartets, soloists and woodwind trios!" In addition, Dr. Curtis worked as accompanist with the choral department at Jacksonville State University, in Jacksonville, Alabama, and with a number of opera
singers. With her family’s New York music agency, she played violin for celebrity events, weddings, bar mitzvahs and city functions. During her Julliard years, Rocket played the complete organ works of J.S. Bach – a feat that took two years of monthly concerts.
This was her “play” time, in addition to her brief foray into a concert career in the New York metropolitan area. With the vocational pull of ministry, she left for seminary, ordination and pastoral leadership. Today, Rocket enjoys a less-demanding music schedule, as organist/pianist at New Hope Presbyterian Church, in Fort Meyers, Florida. She and her husband, Fr. Ed Sellers, enjoy their church life, travel, biking, hiking, dancing, entertaining and other happy times. They are grateful to the Lord for all their blessings.
Lyric soprano Maya Bloom is excited for the opportunity to perform in her beloved Boothbay Harbor!
Maya has always loved singing, and while she currently works in tech, she has two music degrees and used to work as an elementary music teacher. She has been a featured soloist in several Boston-area choirs, including the Back Bay Chorale, where she has been a choir member since 2019. Now, Maya has returned to pursuing professional-level singing as a passion project, most recently singing in the choir for the Handel and Haydn Society at Symphony Hall!
She is currently preparing for a full recital in October, and hopes you enjoy the Puccini and Schubert selections she’ll share in this concert, along with one of her favorite Mozart numbers!
All the musicians are donating their time and talent so this concert is free and open to all. Let's fill the house!
