Damariscotta Green: where conservation and recreation will mindfully meet and overlap
The concept behind the proposed Damariscotta Green is simple: an in-town restorative greenspace dedicated to relaxation and recreation for all. The planning is well underway for this common space that will include a graded, eight-foot-wide trail around the property as a way to accommodate multiple mobilities.
“The nearly two-acre parcel is unique in that it naturally offers two distinct experience spaces,” said Shannon Parker, the Damariscotta resident spearheading the project. “There are some slices of designated wetlands in one section of the proposed park and we aim to mindfully protect those rich, diverse ecosystems. The naturalists involved in the planning of Damariscotta Green are focused on supporting wildlife and native plants while clearing the land of destructive invasive species,” Parker added. Minimal development is planned for delicate ecosystems that aren’t formally designated as wetlands. Within these areas, the planning team envisions an historic garden to honor the Damariscotta Historical Society that abuts the property; butterfly gardens; pedestrian bridges to protect fragile plants and streams; educational kiosks highlighting the value of wetlands, plants, and bird life.
An abutting section of the greenspace has more capacity for recreation typically found in a New England town common. Picnics. Outdoor enrichment classes. Being social. Reading. Restoring. Gathering. Supporters agree they’ve rarely experienced a New England town that doesn’t have a town common or communal gathering space and the proposed Damariscotta Green aims to add this rich resource to existing amenities. “This project is very much a community effort,” Parker shared, “everyone brings such unique talent and excitement to the planning and that’s what we want—a community asset forged by community.”
Currently, fundraising is underway to acquire the property. Early visionaries have already committed time, talent, and dollars to Damariscotta Green. Still, there’s a ways to go. Envisioned as a place where conversation and recreation can mindfully meet and overlap, the design team welcomes community input, and community support.
