Democrats host Bill Nemitz
Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram columnist Bill Nemitz will be the featured speaker at the Oct. 17 meeting of Lincoln County Democrats in Damariscotta. Lincoln County Democratic Committee (LCDC) chairman Lisa Miller announced that this is the second time Nemitz has come to meet with the LCDC.
“His talk in November 2012 was the most favorably received and best attended event that year or in the two years since,” Miller said.
In the opinion of many, Nemitz is Maine’s leading columnist and political commentator. His columns range across a broad spectrum of issues important to Mainers. His political commentary can be sharp and is always incisive.
As he has said himself, his role “is to be provocative, get people talking and reacting ... you don’t write a column hoping everyone will agree with.”
And that is evident in his clashes with Gov. Paul LePage over the past four years.
Nemitz has been a journalist in Maine since 1977 when he began reporting for the Waterville Morning Sentinel. He joined the staff of the Press Herald in 1985 where he has worked since. During his career, in addition to reporting on events in Maine, he has reported from New York City, in the aftermath of 9/11, from New Orleans after Katrina, from Ireland after the peace accords and on multiple occasions from Iraq.
Nemitz will address the current political scene in Maine and prospects for the upcoming election. The event will take place at LCDC headquarters at 372 Main Street (next door to Hilltop convenience store) in Damariscotta. A social hour will begin at 6:30 p.m., which will be followed by a short business meeting of the LCDC. Nemitz will speak shortly after 7 p.m. The event is free and all are welcome.
