Dorothy M. Patton
Dorothy M. Patton of Boothbay Harbor, Maine, passed away on June 11, 2019.
She was born to Arthur and Virginia (Moore) Blake on Sept. 12, 1930. She attended local schools and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in 1948. She was very athletic, playing softball, basketball and cheerleading. She played the trumpet in the school band and sang in the chorus. After high school she formed a bowling team; the “Bowlerettes” and bowled on a regular basis, winning many trophies and awards at Romar Bowling Lanes until they closed the business.
She worked for 20th Century Fox for a number of years. During the filming of the movie "Carousel" filmed in Boothbay Harbor, Dorothy worked with actors Gordon McRae, Sheila McRae and Shirley Jones. For many years after the filming of the movie, Shirley Jones would send flowers to Dorothy on her birthday. Author Sterling Hayden taught her to row a boat. She worked for Spruce Point Inn during the summer and met many actors and President John Kennedy.
For many years Dorothy worked as a receptionist and switchboard operator at St. Andrews Hospital, and worked many years for Rupert Neily. She enjoyed singing in the Methodist Church choir, her hobbies included knitting, reading, puzzles, rollerskating and ice skating.
She was predeceased by her parents, son Timothy Sherman, grandson, Todd Sherman, brother, Lee Blake and sister, Jean McVicker.
Dorothy met Sidney Sherman and they were married in 1948 and raised six children: sons, Roland Sherman and his wife Stephanie of Southport, Maine, David Sherman and his partner, Margaret Hoffman, also of Southport, Maine, daughters, Vickie Carver and her husband Ernie of West Boothbay Harbor, Maine, Paula Sherman of Williamsburg, Virginia, and Kathy Bladgon of Wiscasset, Maine.
Dorothy is also survived by her two sisters, Ann Blanks of Indiana, and Jill Correa of Maryland.
She was blessed with grandchildren; Dennis, Michael, Brian and Kevin Carver, all of Boothbay, Maine, Sean and Zackary Blagdon of Wiscasset, Maine, and one granddaughter, Ashley Sherman of Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
She married Robert Patton in the late '80s and enjoyed traveling and spending the winter months in Florida. After Bob’s passing she enjoyed the companionship of James Townsend and together they traveled around the United States for which they both enjoyed.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, July 2, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 81 Townsend Ave. Boothbay Harbor, ME. 04538 with a reception to follow in the vestry.
