DOT agrees to inspect Eddy Road
The Maine Department of Transportation will see for themselves on Friday what Edgecomb town officials have complained about for years.
DOT Region II manager Michael Burns and his staff along with the Edgecomb selectmen will inspect the Eddy Road.
The DOT is responding to a Sept. 8 letter from the board of selectmen asking for assistance in repairing the state-owned road.
Town officials have described the road’s condition as being a “safety hazard” for several years. Selectman Jack Sarmanian said the problem stems from the road’s soft shoulder and its inability to support large commercial-size trucks.
In June, Fire Chief Roy Potter informed the selectmen he would allow fire trucks on the road “only under extreme emergency conditions.” The Edgecomb Selectmen sent the letter at Potter’s recommendation. Town officials hope the inspection will lead to better and safer road conditions. Sarmanian described the worst section of the road as when it begins to follow the shoreline.
“All you have to do is look at the road to know it needs work,” Sarmanian said.
In June, the selectmen said road is constantly in poor condition because the only maintenance is a skim coat done every 10 years. The selectmen said the road needs a new culvert along with better drainage and ditching.
According to Sarmanian, the town has been concerned about the Eddy Road’s condition for years, but this is the first official request for state assistance.
The DOT will meet with the selectmen at the Sheepscot Village Inn on Oct. 3 at 3 p.m. Town officials also invited local legislators.
