Downtown project meeting Oct. 5
Residents can see street amenities, a parking plan and illustrations of what the Wiscasset downtown project will look like at a Maine Department of Transportation informational meeting from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 5 in the Wiscassset Elementary School gym.
Ernie Martin, MDOT project manager, told the Public Advisory Committee Monday the program will include a power point presentation to share results of a recent survey. “Some of the amenity choices are pretty clear as far as what people would prefer and some are not,” he said.
Martin hopes the final selections can be determined at the meeting. “We’ll have electronic clickers so that people can vote for their preferences and then announce the results right there.”
Residents will have three different styles of lampposts to choose from. Martin said these are the same styles used by Bath and Hallowell. All are black with a colonial-style top with arms for plant holders, flag holders, or both. All would be equipped with electrical outlets for lighting. The lights will be from 14 to 16 feet in height installed on both sides of Main Street from Middle to Water streets.
Other details to be decided include trees, with a choice between Japanese lilac and flowering pear. Six are planned, three on each side of Main Street, the location yet to be determined. The choice of bollards along Main Street sidewalks will be between metal and granite posts. Both will have metal chains between them. Lighted bollards are planned along the asphalt sidewalk to be constructed on Railroad Avenue.
MDOT will share several options of signal phasing for the traffic signals planned at the intersections of Water and Middle streets. Turning arrows have been suggested, but not finalized.
Martin hopes there will be a sizable turnout for the meeting. It was announced through a mass mailing and newspaper advertisements. “We’d like to get the town’s recommendations before too long,” he added. The final recommendations need selectmen’s approval.
MDOT plans to start the estimated $4 million to $5 million project in 2018 and complete it in 2019. Test borings downtown and on Railroad Avenue will begin in October. Construction will be carried out at night and shut down in July and August.
