Dr. Leander A. Guite Jr.
Dr. Leander A. “Lee” Guite Jr., M.D. FACS, 81, died on Sunday, July 7, 2013.
Lee was born in Waterville on August 16, 1931 to Leander and Gabrielle Pomerleau Giute Sr.
Lee graduated from St. John’s Prep in Waterville in 1949. He then graduated from Bowdoin College in 1953 and from Tufts University Medical School in 1957. Lee served his internship and first year residency at University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, then he did his surgical residency at Maine Medical Center in Portland from 1961 to 1964. After his residency at Maine Medical, Lee married Linda Rossnagle and returned to Waterville to open his practice.
Lee also served his country by serving as a captain in the United States Army from 1959 to 1961.
He was stationed in Korea with the 11th EVAC for 13 months, then onto Valley Forge Army Hospital and later being honorably discharged. He was on the staff at Thayer and Seton Hospitals until 1990 then at Togas VA Hospital until he retired in 1995.
He enjoyed sailing, skiing and playing bridge. Lee’s love and care for his boats, Fog Bound, Misty, Dolemea and Goop, were amazing. He was a Fellow with the American College of Surgeons and was the president of the Maine Chapter for two years. He was also a member of the Maine Medical Association and the Maine Vascular Society.
Lee was a loving husband and father, teaching the family how to sail and ski. He and Linda sailed many times in the Caribbean and in the Bay Islands off Honduras. They also traveled to Europe, and maybe their best trip of all, a 10-day sail around the Galapagos Islands.
Lee was predeceased by his parents and his youngest brother, John.

Guite of Falls Church , Va.; daughters, Melissa and her husband, Sheshadri, and their daughter, Annamika, of Natick, Mass.; Stephani Guite and her husband, Glenn Beavis, and their children, Willow, Reed, and Teal of East Boothbay; Amy Greuel and her husband, Greg, and their children, Olivia and Allison of South Freeport; son, Matthew Lee Guite, and his wife Blair Atherton.
Memorial Mass was held July 12 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Boothbay Harbor with his cousin, the Rev. Frank Murray, officiating.
Lee’s final resting place will be at the head of the Damariscotta River off Ocean Point.
Between now and the sail, Lee’s urn will be placed in a new garden at his home with perennials from his nephew, Christopher Guite, given in his memory.
