Dresden updates contract for winter road plowing
The Dresden Board of Selectmen took up several matters at its regular Monday night meeting including an update of its winter plowing and sanding contract as well as citizens’ complaints.
Goodall Landscaping of Topsham has had a three-year contract with the Town of Dresden. This year’s installment for work totals $181,897.
Resident complaints
In other business, the board heard a complaint from resident Heather Beasley, who started to burn items that the Dresden Fire Dept. has asserted are not permitted to be burned.
However, Beasely insisted on her rights, but the board had to end the discussion, which at several points began to get heated.
There were allegations of misconduct brought up during the meeting about Beasley’s response when the fire department arrived at her property to investigate the fire. The matter awaits further investigation.
During Monday’s session, selectmen also aired complaints about parking at Ship’s Chow Hall on Route 27 in the Village. Parking too close to the corner creates a hazard to motorists, who have difficulty seeing past the vehicles at the intersection there, they said.
Selectmen contacted the Maine Dept. of Transportation, which advised the board to pass an ordinance so that they can place a no parking sign near the corner to prohibit further abuse and prevent possible accidents. The board itself can enact an ordinance without the vote of the town in this case, according to selectmen.
Regular town affairs
Selectman Allan Moeller updated the board on roadwork being done throughout the town, including current maintenance on Alexander Road and change of two culverts on McFadden Road.
Fire Chief Steve Lilly informed the board the fire department has to update its Federal Communications Commission license for radio operation.
The board also discussed the e-waste disposal, which is expected to occur later this month. Selectmen will be contacting Lincoln County about the matter before deciding on the date for the disposal of e-waste goods, such as computers, at the recycling center in town.
Chairman Phil Johnston told the board he has been working on the board’s portion of the comprehensive plan, for which the other board members have had input. The board’s portion will go back to the comprehensive plan committee for its review.
Kenyon Center
During the meeting, the board announced an open house on Monday, Oct. 20 at 8 a.m. at the new Kenyon Center, which is the modular building Dresden Elementary School has been using for its library. It is located adjacent to the school.
Thanks to money from the Kenyon Fund, a fund set up in town for the furtherance of the arts, the modular will now include the possibility of its use for various art forms. Some of the funds went to refurbishing the modular building with water connection for that purpose.
Executive session
The board went into executive session on personnel matters and came out of the session with no decision made.
