Driver found for district students to get to WMHS
Bussing for several Sheepscot Valley Regional School Unit (SVRSU) students to Wiscasset Middle High School will continue the rest of the school year without interruption, after some uncertainty over who would drive them, the district’s operations director John Merry said May 6.
“So it’s worked out, after a lot of stress,” he said.
Merry, who also serves as Wiscasset School Department’s facilities and transportation director, told the Wiscasset School Committee on April 28 he was not sure a driver would be found for the bus run by the week of May 7. The run’s driver could no longer do it and a replacement had not been found, Merry said at the time.
But the driver was able to work one more week, so there was no interruption in the bus run that, on an average day, transports 15 to 20, mostly grades 9 through 12, students from Chelsea, Whitefield and Windsor to WMHS, Merry said in Friday’s phone interview.
There had been no takers for the bus run, in or outside the department, even when Merry contacted bus companies. But now a Windsor Elementary School cook, who is also a substitute bus driver, has agreed do it, Merry said.
“I’m glad that it worked out,” SVRSU Superintendent of Schools Howie Tuttle said Friday. “I wasn’t sure what we were going to do.” He was very surprised at how hard it was to find a driver, he added.
Meanwhile, the district has been preparing to lose Merry from its ranks. Wiscasset’s proposed school budget grows his job from three days a week to five. His SVRSU job is two days a week. Tuttle said the district plans to create a new position that would head up transportation, maintenance and food service. After Wiscasset withdrew, the district tried to get by without a food service director, but one is needed to keep up with the many regulations in place these days, he said.
“I hope we can find someone.”
