Early settlers and old roads of Midcoast Maine
The Friends of Colonial Pemaquid is pleased to sponsor an evening lecture entitled “Early Settlers and Old Roads of Midcoast Maine” on Monday, Aug. 8 by historian and Camden resident, Kerry Hardy, who will take a look at the development of roads in the Midcoast area, beginning with the waterways and Native American trails and moving on to the development of bridal paths, early roads, stage routes and other means of moving people and products. Hardy will enhance the program with a slide presentation of early photographs and maps, giving great insight into the fascinating development of the local area.
Hardy was born and lives in Camden, where his fascination with the outdoor world led him to eventually get a master of landscape architecture degree from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. He practiced landscape design and construction for many years and also served as executive director at Merryspring Nature Park at Camden and Rockport. Hardy is the author of the 2009 book, “Notes on a Lost Flute: A Field Guide to the Wabanaki,” which he wrote by applying research, writing, drawing, photography and language tinkering to the subjects of flora, fauna, and human ecology in an attempt to understand pre-contact Wabanaki, the “The Peoples of the Dawnland.”
Hardy’s program will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Contented Sole Restaurant adjacent to the museum. Admission is $5, and free for members. Membership applications are available at each event.
Visitors are encouraged to return to Colonial Pemaquid on Monday, Aug. 15 for “The French and Indian Wars in Maine,” a lecture by Mike Dekker highlighting the epic power struggle that raged across the Maine frontier between 1675 and 1759. Lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. at The Contented Sole Restaurant on the grounds of Colonial Pemaquid.
