Eclipse 2017: These series of photos of Monday’s eclipse were take by a staff photographer on Southport Island between 1:31 p.m. and 2:56 p.m. In Maine, Monday’s solar eclipse was only partial. At the eclipse’s maximum, the moon blocked about 57 percent of the sun’s light. It was the first total eclipse seen in the U.S. since 1918. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon falls directly in the path of the sun, which is about the same size, visually, as seen from Earth.
