Edgecomb looking for ‘Spirit of America’ nominee
The Edgecomb Board of Selectmen is looking for a community member, organizations or project which performs a commendable community service. Edgecomb is one of 100 Maine towns in six counties (Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Somerset, Androscoggin, Kennebec and Waldo) that Spirit of America Volunteer Recognition program approached to nominate worthy recipient earlier this year.
The organization requested a nominee this spring, but so far the town hadn’t provided one. On August 11, Bruce Flaherty, who was one of the original members of the Maine Spirit of America Foundation, requested the Board of Selectmen nominate a candidate soon. The organization wants to honor the town’s nominee this November during a county-wide recognition ceremony.
Selectmen Stuart Smith and Jessica Chubbuck are considering nominating Bob and Carol Leone, who began a local Trails To Teens program. The Leones started Trails To Teens which is dedicated to increasing high school students’ outdoor experience by hiking trails in Maine and throughout the northeast. Trails To Teens also supports high school Outing Clubs. Bob Leone is also administers the town’s Schmid Land Trust Preserve. He oversees the 1,000-acre preserve and trail system.
After Smith proposed nominating the Leones, Chubbuck responded, “That’s a great suggestion.”
The two selectmen want to check with Selectman Jack Sarmanian prior to making a nomination. Sarmanian was unable to attend the meeting. According to the selectmen, he was dealing with a family matter out of state. He’s expected to miss the next board meeting in two weeks. A town official is expected to call or email Sarmanian this week to see if there are another possible candidates for the volunteerism award. The selectmen expect to hold a special presentation during a future board meeting honoring the designee.
Flaherty also recommended that the board nominate someone early enough in 2015 so the ceremony could be held during the annual town meeting.
The board will meet next at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 25 in the municipal building.
