Edgecomb receives $500 gift to support new Girl Scout troop
A former Boy Scout is doing a good deed for a local Girl Scout troop. E. Davies Allan of Westport Island sent a prospective Edgecomb Girl Scout Troop a $500 check to cover rental fees for organizational meetings. Last month, Allan, 77, read in the Wiscssset Newspaper about an attempt to form a new Edgecomb troop.
On Dec. 18, Edgecomb selectmen approved allowing the Girls Scouts of Maine to use the town hall on Jan. 17 rent-free to see how many local girls were interested in forming a troop. But selectmen also decided that all future meetings required the same $50 rental fee other non-profit groups paid.
This led Allan to send a donation to cover 10 rental fees. Allan is from Westhampton, New York. As a child, he spent three years in the Boy Scouts. He said he wanted to support scouting locally because it teaches “civility, knowledge and kindness.”
“I thought it was an important thing to do,” said Allan. “I was a scout, but not a very good one. It’s a good program whether it’s for the Boys, Girls, or Cub scouts. When I read about it I didn’t want money to serve as a barrier for the program. It’s a great activity and I really hope this comes to fruition.”
Edgecomb selectmen received the donation during their Jan. 2 board meeting. All three were appreciative. “This is unbelievably generous,” said Selectman Jack Sarmanian.
Allan has lived in Lincoln County for nearly 40 years. In the summer, he lives on a 15-acre island near Boothbay. For the past 35 years, he has lived during the winter on a 40-acre property near the water on Westport Island. Allan is a marine contractor for Chesterfield Associates Inc. in Boothbay.
The informational meeting begins at 6 p.m. Girl Scouts of Maine has also identified Ida Chapman and Carrie Lehoullier as potential local troop leaders.
