Theater group considering Edgecomb town hall as summer venue
For the past two years, Boothbay Summer Theater has produced theatrical productions in Boothbay Harbor. In 2022, BST produced "Christmas Bride," a musical at the Opera House, and "My Witch: The Margaret Hamilton Story" at Carousel Music Theater.
Boothbay Summer Theater is part of Snowlion Productions, a Portland-based production company owned by Margit Ahlin and Al D'Andrea, who moved to the Boothbay region in 2020. In creating BST, the couple planned on bringing summer theater back to the region.
In 2025, BST plans on producing "Red," a two-man play. "Red" is a Broadway play based on Mark Rothko, a New York City artist in 1958 commissioned to paint a group of murals for the Four Seasons Restaurant. BST will perform the play during Windjammer Days, June 24, 25, 26 and 27. The second run would be July 3, 5, 6 and 7. BST plans six shows per week with four matinees.
Edgecomb selectmen spent about 30 minutes discussing Boothbay Summer Theater's proposal for renting the town hall. Selectmen tabled the request in order to review details and propose a rental fee at their next meeting in two weeks. Selectman Michael Maxim found BST"s proposal interesting. "I'm very excited about this," he said. "I mentioned this to Margit that Rothko is someone I studied in school, and I think this is a great topic."
In other action, selectmen plan to equip the business office with new furniture. Selectmen approved spending $4,193 for two desks, chairs, a printer and a locking cabinet. Selectmen also tapped Ted Hugger to serve as the Nov. 5 Election Day warden.
Selectmen meet next at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12 in the conference room.
