Environmental book club to meet in January
The Bremen Public Library and Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) are teaming up to present a new book club in Lincoln County focused on environmental issues. The group will meet from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, Jan. 2, 16 and 30, with a snow date of Feb. 6 at Bremen Public Library located at 204 Waldoboro Rd, Bremen, Maine.
Both Bremen Public Library and Knox-Lincoln SWCD chose to explore one of Maine’s greatest resources — trees — by reading and discussing George David Haskell’s “The Songs of Trees; Stories from Nature’s Great Connectors.” Yvonne Gloede of Bremen Library and Rebecca Jacobs of Knox-Lincoln SWCD will guide readers through Haskell’s multiple visits around the world observing twelve trees. Winner of the 2018 John Burroughs Medal for Outstanding Natural History Writing, Haskell, a professor of biology and environmental studies at Sewanee: The University of the South, Tennessee, explains the scientific interconnectedness of ecology in skilled prose. Receiving praise from top literary critics, this book is not to be missed. Elizabeth Kolbert, author of “The Sixth Extinction,” says “David George Haskell is a wonderful writer and an equally keen observer of the natural world. “The Song of Trees” is at once lyrical and informative, filled with beauty and also a sense of loss.”
Participants are asked to read the first of three sections before the first gathering. For those not wishing to purchase books, limited copies are available to borrow through your local library or InterLibrary Loan. Please feel free to bring a bagged lunch. There is no fee for the program. For planning purposes, participants are asked to pre-register by calling Knox-Lincoln SWCD at 596-2040 or emailing julie@knox-lincoln.org.
