A flavorful summer quest
Summer residents Zoë and Christie Gillies came up with a challenging quest at the beginning of this past summer: to try all 56 flavors that the Ice Cream Factory had to offer. Zoë started with '57 Chevy Apple Pie and Christie started at Wild Maine Blueberry. They planned to meet in the middle of the flavor board. The girls quickly found out that this delicious work would take dedication. Sometimes they went to the Ice Cream Factory up to five days in a row.
They kept a running chart and rated each flavor. Five stars were given to exceptional flavors and zero stars for not so up-to-par flavors. Neighbors on Juniper Point, staff at the Ice Cream Factory and fellow boaters from their grandmother's marina located just behind the Ice Cream Factory had fun staying caught up on their progress and inquiring about the ratings. Finally in September, the girls sampled their last flavor and completed their chart.
Alden and Mary Alyce Greene, owners of Downeast Ice Cream, were so impressed with the Gillies girls' endeavor that they tasked them with another mission: to come up with a flavor of their own and, if the staff can make it, the new flavor will be added to the board for next summer.
