Gardens’ reception celebrates works in wood and their creators
Each year, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens adds a new perspective to its plantings and pathways with an exhibit of sculpture by many of New England’s finest artists. This year’s show, “Living Wood,” is inspired by the Gardens’ 2013 theme, Trees, Timbers and Traditions. The public is invited to a free reception to celebrate the art and artists on Thursday, June 27, from 5 to 7 p.m.
“Living Wood,” curated by June LaCombe of Pownal, features sculpture in many sizes and styles, along with imaginative benches and a one-of-a-kind rose arbor. What all the pieces have in common is that they are fashioned primarily of wood.
Outdoor works sited throughout the Central Gardens and along walkways are by Anne Alexander, Lise Becu, John Bowdren, Ray Carbone, Farrell and Company, Herb Ferris, Benjamin Thompson, Dan West, Melita Westerlund and John Wilkinson. In the Visitor Center are two settees of oak and maple by Wayne Hall. In many cases, the artists have more than one piece on exhibit.
Although not strictly part of the exhibit, other pieces are on view outdoors: an owl by Andreas von Huene, a sleeping dove by Jim Sardonis, and a huge dragonfly by Diby Veevers Carter. The Gardens also has an impressive permanent collection of sculpture on the grounds. Some of these pieces are by artists represented in this year’s exhibit.
“Living Wood” will be on view until September 22. For more information, visit www.mainegardens.org or call 207-633-4333, ext. 101. Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is on Barters Island Road in Boothbay.
