George Lovette’s abstract landscapes at Rising Tide
During the month of July, the public is invited to view examples of George Lovette’s large scale oil paintings at Rising Tide Community Market. The show is part of Rising Tide’s ongoing art program to promote the work of local artists in the cafe section of the store.
An opening reception including a wine tasting will be held on Friday, July 4 from 4 to 6 p.m.
The paintings for the exhibit were selected from George Lovette’s Horizon Series, which includes about 40 canvasses created between 1985 and the artist’s untimely death in 2008. His widow, Christine Hopf-Lovette of Wiscasset, prepared the exhibit in his memory.
“George’s work is not only beautiful, but it has a calming effect in today’s busy world,” Hopf-Lovette said.
Owners of George Lovette’s oils perceive the subtly-hued landscapes as illustrations of a variety of places in nature, such as seascapes or mountain ranges. And because the artist didn’t want to influence the viewer’s experience, Lovette refused to give titles to his paintings, which are identified simply by numbers.
