David Howarth of Southport took this photo and offered some interesting points with its submission: “As I walked along Cozy Harbor I took this picture and I was struck first by the subtle beauty and then by my own thoughts about work. I work in the technology industry and whenever I open my laptop or iPad, for whatever reason, I feel like I am working. Do lobstermen feel the same way about boats and the ocean? Do they receive pleasure from the idyllic scenes non-lobstermen covet? A lobstermen’s life is hard. I sincerely hope they still derive pleasure from their surroundings and are able to separate the beauty from the work.

The Southport Selectmen were pleased to announce at their regular meeting on July 19, that the mil rate for the town has remained steady at 0.00391. This steady tax rate, according to selectman Gerry Gamage, was because the town’s annual budget was down at bit from last year. Last year’s net costs were $2,920,875.37, while this year’s is $2,889,639.40, for a difference of $31,235.97. The town selectmen also sent out a check for $2,500 to the Boothbay Region Community Center. These funds were approved at this year’s town meeting. “A fair amount of our neighbors on Southport use the center,” selectmen Mary Lou Koskela said. KATRINA RICKERMANN/Boothbay Register
