Good-bye March, bring on April
Yes, Mother Nature, we get it. You like to humor us at the end of March by dumping snow, ice, sleet and rain – making sure we have a wonderful mud season – as a reminder that spring comes slowly to our state.
We have had enough reminders of winter. The amount of sand on the roads, and now appearing on the sides of the roads, indicates that our road crews have been “hard at it,” especially during February and March. We are sure that those departments are ready to park their plow trucks until next winter. From our standpoint, they have done a fine job keeping the roads cleared this winter (and now spring). We’ve had harder winters with more snow and ice, but we would have to check with the road crews to see how often they were out getting the roads cleared. It seems to us that there were a good amount of days, nights and early mornings for plowing and sanding. Thank you road crews!
April is also a tricky month for weather. Don’t park those plows just yet, road crews. Who remembers the early April storm back in 1982? I do and luckily my wife and I survived and went through with our wedding. A usual hour-long trip to Bath and back to Boothbay Harbor to pick up our wedding invitations turned into a six-hour trip, with Bath Iron Works letting their workers out early, a slide-off near Taste of Maine and a logging truck off the road on Route 27 between the hills in Edgecomb. I made the mistake of asking my wife (who drove the whole way) if she wanted to start to fill out the wedding invitations that night. If looks could kill …!
Spring has sprung but winter weather lingers. Be safe on the roads!
