Holiday Treasures: A celebration of the season
Sylvan Gallery is proud to present “Holiday Treasures,” our 13th annual holiday exhibition of art by 18 contemporary artists from December 7 through January 31, 2014. The opening reception will be on Saturday, December 7 from noon to 4 p.m. Please join us for exceptional fine art, holiday cheer and refreshments of the season.
Holiday Treasures showcases oil paintings, watercolors, and pastels with an emphasis on smaller to medium sized works, perfect for holiday gift giving. The subject matter presented is the artistsʼ personal choice with many of the paintings capturing the beauty and atmosphere of the coastal landscape as well as classical still lifes and figurative works.
Artists include: Peter Layne Arguimbau, Joann Ballinger, Al Barker, Angelo Franco, Heather Gibson-Lusk, Susanah Haney, Neal Hughes, Tina Ingraham, Charles Kolnik, Greg Laderer, Victor Mays, Stan Moeller, Robert Noreika, Crista Pisano, Ann Scanlan, Polly Seip, Shirley Cean Youngs and Trenton Forster Youngs.
As a special feature for the first two weeks of the exhibit, the gallery will also be featuring the Asian-inspired jackets of Wiscasset resident Hopf-Lovette. These one-of-a kind jackets were created from fabric she selected while on a recent trip to Japan.
Well-known Connecticut impressionist Shirley Cean Youngs offers an evocative image of children playing along the waterʼs edge in her oil painting “Abound with Treasures.”
Franco is an artist inspired by the luminous light of the New England landscape, and his paintings in the exhibition capture the serenity of winterʼs radiant twilights. His restrained use of color and atmospheric mood is reminiscent of the late 19th century American tonalists while his painterly technique has an Impressionist quality.
A long-time resident of York, Moellerʼs spontaneous brushwork captures the figure in various environments including on the streets and museums of Paris.
Kolnik has a style identifiably his own. His rich, evocative oil paintings are created by applying layers of transparent glazes — a technique he developed by studying the methods of the old masters.
Also featured in the exhibition, Ballinger’s pastels of children at the water’s edge; the jewel-sized intimate still life paintings of classically trained artist Gibson-Lusk; exciting surf paintings by Boothbay resident Laderer, and Seipʼs lush water views.
Sylvan Gallery is located at 60 Main Street in Wiscasset and is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4. For more information, call 207-882-8290. Check the gallery website, www.sylvangallery.com, for holiday closings.
