'Illuminateds' show opens August 8 in East Boothbay
The Probably-sixth Almost-annual show of work by the group known as the “Illuminateds” will open on August 8 this year. The opening will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in The Barn at 115 Paradise Point Road in East Boothbay and promises to be as varied and exciting a show as ever. All are welcome.
This group of printmakers, from different backgrounds, has worked together with the guidance of Susan Newbold for a number of years, while pursuing separate projects that complement their work together. Priscilla May Alden, Barbara Fischer Eldred, Priscilla Hayes, Pat McHold, Mary Nelson, Susan Newbold, Mary Lou Newstead, Carole Palmer, Ron Salter and Betsy Wing are the artists whose work will be represented.
Monotypes will dominate the exhibit. Unlike most forms of printing, the art of the monotype is a painterly process that, though it usually involves using a press, does not produce the repeatable images generally associated with printmaking. Monotype images are valued for their immediacy and uniqueness. They are frequently created by painting on a plate that is then run through the press. Sometimes they are formed by combining several different printing methods, including the use of gelatin, wood or linoleum plates. In addition these printmakers work with polyester lithography, as well as the more classical techniques of aquatint, etching or dry-point. The exhibit will range through many degrees of realism and abstraction and include other related works from the artists’ various fields of endeavor.
The exhibit will continue to hang for some time and can be seen by appointment by contacting any of the artists involved.
