Interfaith MLK Day service Jan. 16 at Newcastle church
An interfaith service will be held on Monday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. to celebrate the life and witness of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Second Congregational Church, UCC, 51 Main St. Newcastle. The service will focus on the parts individuals and the community can play in building Dr. King’s “Beloved Community” in the Midcoast and beyond.
The featured speaker will be Reza Jalali, the Muslim chaplain at Bowdoin College and the Multicultural Student Affairs Coordinator at the University of Southern Maine.
Following the service small groups will have time for reflection and learn about actionable resources to dismantle racism, such as books, a movie, and discussion groups that will meet during the following month and culminate in a community potluck lunch on Feb. 12 at 12:30 p.m. at the Second Congregational Church.
The events are sponsored by People United Against Racism, an ecumenical community group standing up to racism and for justice and love in our community.
